Watch: Chargers' Joe Alt has awkward meeting with new head coach

Meeting the boss can be uncomfortable, especially when your boss is Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh, the most awkward man in professional sports.

Was that an introduction or the world's most boring game of “Simon Says?” With his back to the camera, we’ll never know if the coach said, “Put your hands on your hips, now hike up your pants.” Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni likes to play “rock, paper, scissors” with his young players. Perhaps it was a test.

Whatever it was, it won’t matter if Alt can live up to his Notre Dame tape. As the consensus top lineman in the 2024 NFL Draft, Alt was selected by the Chargers at pick No. 5.

After trading six-time Pro Bowler Keenan Allen to the Bears and losing Mike Williams to the Jets, many expected the team to take LSU’s Malik Nabers. His 1,569 yards were second-most among FBS receivers in 2023 and would have been an excellent weapon for quarterback Justin Herbert.

But Harbaugh sees things differently. “Offensive linemen we look at as weapons,” he told reporters after the draft. “When we talk about attacking on offense… offensive line is the tip of the spear.”
